Pietra lighthouse from L’Île-Rousse

Pietra offers L’Île-Rousse a short walk with open sea views. From the town centre, you reach the harbour area, then the rocks beneath the lighthouse. Town remains close, but the wind and changing light already give this headland a different atmosphere from the shopping streets.

The reference outing starts and ends at place Pascal-Paoli. It covers 3.6 km in around 1 h 05 of walking, excluding breaks and the approach from the station. This lets you discover the coast without devoting a whole day to a mountain hike. The final climb and rocky surroundings still require suitable shoes and close supervision of children.

The lighthouse is an outdoor walking destination here, not a promise of access inside. Allow time to look towards the town and the hills of Balagne, then return at leisure. If travelling by train, decide your return time before settling down for a long break facing the sea.

Landmarks along the walk

From L’Île-Rousse station, reach place Pascal-Paoli, the reference start. This short approach is separate from the route’s figures. Then identify pedestrian routes towards the harbour and Pietra, watching for vehicles around port access areas.

Continue towards the islets linked to the town. The view gradually broadens: façades fall behind you and rocks occupy more of the landscape. Follow the established path. Tracks on the granite do not necessarily constitute a recommended public route.

The climb towards the lighthouse is the most pronounced part of this short outing. Walk at your own pace and stay away from edges, especially in wind. Rocks can be slippery when wet. You do not need to descend to water level to enjoy the panorama.

Near the lighthouse, observe the different horizons from accessible spots. The tower and lighthouse are heritage landmarks; respect closed entrances and technical equipment. This is also a natural site where shortcuts easily damage low vegetation.

Return towards the town centre along the same general route. Allow time to reach the station and buy a ticket if needed. A sunset walk can be pleasant, but requires checking the last train and carrying a light for darker sections. In heavy swell or strong winds, choose a sheltered urban walk and avoid the headland.

Out-and-back from place Pascal-Paoli. Descent is not specified in the reference track. Interior monument visits and guided walks are not included. Documentary check: 19 September 2026.

Along the way
