Notre-Dame de la Serra from Calvi

Above Calvi, Notre-Dame de la Serra offers a viewpoint bringing together town, citadel, gulf and hills. Walking up connects this panorama to the places you have just crossed: streets, the first slopes of maquis, then more open paths approaching the chapel.

The selected loop starts in central Calvi, near the citadel, and returns through the pine woods and along the sea. Its 8.67 km takes around 3 h 10 of walking, excluding breaks and the link from the station. This is therefore more than a monument visit: a genuine half-day walk with a trail ascent and descent.

Heat and stones make the route more demanding than its proximity to town suggests. The moderate rating encourages you to allow for these conditions, particularly if you are unused to dry descents. Start early enough to enjoy the heights without having to hurry later to catch your train.

Landmarks along the walk

From Calvi station, reach the start on rue Albert-Ier, near the citadel. This urban link precedes the reference loop. Keep a map available: the route crosses several streets before reaching the path, and directions to the chapel should not be confused with an entirely road-based approach.

The first stretches gradually leave the centre. Follow pedestrian signs to Notre-Dame de la Serra and yellow waymarks as you enter the path. Houses give way to maquis and rocks. A steady pace is worthwhile on the climb, especially when the sun is already high.

Near the chapel, the last steps lead to the viewpoint. Take time to observe the gulf’s contours and the citadel below. The statue and building belong to a religious site: keep any break discreet, and access inside depends on whether the building is open.

The loop continues by the cemetery, then rejoins descending paths. This section needs more care than the climb: dry ground can slide under your shoes and some path entrances are unobtrusive. Stay on the chosen route rather than following a more direct track towards villas or roads visible below.

After the descent, walking becomes urban again before reaching the pine woods and beach. The contrast between the elevated viewpoint and sea level is part of this loop’s appeal. Near the railway, stay on public paths and cross only at authorised crossings; the rails are never a shortcut.

The return follows the coast, then reaches the central streets and starting point. A stop at the harbour can pleasantly extend the outing if your timetable allows. Still leave a margin for reaching the station. If you return directly from the chapel along the ascent path, this is a different variant: the loop’s figures no longer apply.

The coastal return does not remove the need to watch the time. A beach or harbour break is additional to the three hours of walking, after which you must reach the correct station entrance. Identify it on arrival by train: this avoids ending the walk by needlessly following the tracks or looking for a crossing that does not exist.

Loop via the chapel, returning through the pine woods. Rated moderate as a precaution because of the descent and heat, although the reference track is rated easy. Returning directly along the ascent path is a different variant. Documentary check: 19 September 2026.

Along the way

Practical advice

Walking shoes, water, a hat and an offline map. Choose a mild day. Respect the religious site and properties near the streets you pass.

Sometimes slippery descent and an unobtrusive trail; noticeable heat on the climb. Stay on public paths and do not walk on the railway tracks.
